Joshua to make comeback against Franklin
Anthony Joshua will fight Jermaine Franklin on 1 April at the O2 Arena in London. 33 year-old Joshua will be seeking a first win since 2020, when he defeated Kubrat Pulev. The British heavyweight is looking to bounce back after back-to-back defeats at the hands of World champion Oleksandr Usyk.
In November, Franklin lost on points to Briton Dillian Whyte, the American’s first loss in 22 fights.
Joshua, a two-time world champion, lost by split decision against Usyk in August. AJ was looking to regain the WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight titles. It was Joshua’s third defeat in 27 bouts. Before his defeats to Usyk, in 2021 and 2022, he suffered a shock loss to Andy Ruiz in 2019, but later avenged this.
Joshua is looking to rebuild his career and has a three-fight plan in place. Providing all goes well against Franklin, the Watford fighter is expected to face Whyte in June before ending the year with a high profile showdown against either WBC champion Tyson Fury or Deontay Wilder.
Joshua will return with a new trainer, Derrick James.
“I want to put on a show and impress my coach as he has high standards,” Joshua said. “Franklin has a good style and a great attitude, which he has shown in recent fights.
“Mentally and physically I feel ready, I’m looking forward to stepping back into the ring on April 1.”
As ever in boxing, nothing is guaranteed and Joshua must overcome Franklin, who will be determined to get back to winning ways after his defeat to Whyte. Franklin said: “I’m ready to show the world why it’s time for me to take my place at the top of the heavyweight division.” He continued: “Joshua had his time. It’s my time to shock the world.”
