Breeders Cup Betting Tips - Friday
There are plenty of UK and Irish entries, but frequent Royal Ascot invader Wesley Ward has the two standouts in Twilight Gleaming 9-2 with Coral and Averly Jane 5-2 with bet365. The former was second in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot and went on to win a listed contest at this trip at Deauville in August. The latter is unbeaten in four starts, over dirt and turf, all with ridiculous ease. She could be special.
PITT’S PICK: Averly Jane
Ain’t Easy all major firms going 6-1 won her debut over this track over a shorter trip then went on to win the Chandelier at Santa Anita over this trip by 4 ¾ lengths racing close to the pace.
Echo Zulu 10-11 with Ladbrokes won the Spinaway at Saratoga then the Frizette over Belmont’s one-turn mile. She tries two turns here for the first time. Hidden Connection 100-30 with William Hill won the Pocahontas at Churchill Downs by 9 ½ lengths over this trip last time out. She has a chance if she likes the track.
Juju’s Map 9-2, William Hill won the Alcibiades at Keeneland over this trip by 4 ½ lengths on the pace. It’s her first time at Del Mar
PITT’S PICK: Hidden Connection
California Angel on offer at 14-1 with William Hill and BetVictor won the Jessamine at Keeneland over this trip by a head.
PITT’S PICK: Hello You
Bob Baffert appears to hold all the aces here with his runners, Barossa, Corniche and Pinehurst.
Barossa 16-1 with Paddy Power, betfair and Betfred ran twice at Del Mar before breaking his maiden at Santa Anita. This is a big step up in class for him.
Corniche (100-30, William Hill) has won both his starts, first at Del Mar over 5 ½ furlongs, then the American Pharoah at Santa Anita over this trip by 3 ¼ lengths.
Pinehurst (8-1, Ladbrokes) is also 2 for 2, both at Del Mar, a five-furlong maiden and the seven-furlong Del Mar Futurity.
PITT’S PICK: Pinehurst
This looks a wide-open contest. Portfolio Company 14-1 with William Hill and Betfair , trained by Chad Brown, has one win and two seconds from three starts, all at 1 1/16 miles.
Charlie Appleby’s Albahr 7-1, William Hill won the Summer Stakes at Woodbine over this trip in his last outing. Grafton Street 33-1 with William Hill was second in that race, and followed up with a win on Woodbine’s all-weather track at the same trip.
Appleby’s other runner is Modern Games 7-2 with most majors, winner of the seven-furlong Somerville Tattersall Stakes at Newmarket. Coinage priced at 25-1 with William Hill and Betfred won the 1 1/16 mile With Anticipation at Saratoga leading all the way for trainer Mark Casse.
Mackinnon 14-1 with Betfair and Betfred, trained by Doug O’Neill, won his last three starts, two of those at Del Mar over this trip. He moves up in class but must be considered.
PITT’S PICK: Mackinnon
Baffert’s Gamine 4-6 with William Hill looks to have scared the opposition away, as only five others are lined up to face her. Winner of nine of her ten starts, she is all speed and is unbeaten in four runs over this trip. It’s her first time at Del Mar, but she has won at several different tracks. She hasn’t run since winning the seven-furlong Ballerina at Saratoga in late August, but she has won off long layoffs before.Regular pilot John Velazquez rides.
The only possible threat to Gamine is Bella Sofia 3-1 from bet365, who is also making her Del Mar debut. She won the 6 ½ furlong Gallant Bloom at Belmont last time, and before that won the seven-furlong Test at Saratoga. She also has shown speed in her races
PITT’S PICK: Gamine
Kevin Ryan’s Glass Slippers 15-2, Betfred looks for a repeat win off a similar preparation to last year, when she won this after a second in Longchamp’s Prix de l’Abbaye and a win in the Flying Five at the Curragh. This year the mare finished third in both of those races, but could score again.
Wesley Ward’s Golden Pal 5-2 with Ladbrokes and Coral won the Juvenile Turf Sprint at Keeneland last year. He’s coming off a gate to wire win in the 5 ½ furlong Woodford at Keeneland.
Ward’s Kimari 12-1 William Hill, second in the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot last year, has a pair of wins in two starts on the dirt this year, and switches back to the turf.
This year’s Prix de l’Abbaye winner A Case of You (bet365 and William Hill go 8-1) can’t be ruled out. Nor can Arrest Me Red 12-1, bet365, winner of both his starts since joining Ward.
Lieutenant Dan 11-1, bet365 won his last three, two at Del Mar, where he is two for two. He’s three for three over this trip. His latest win came at Santa Anita in the Eddie D over 6 ½ furlongs.
PITT’S PICK: Lieutenant Dan
Life Is Good (4-5 Ladbrokes and Coral) looks the one they all have to beat. He’s four for five lifetime. He’ll be making his third start for Todd Pletcher after having been moved from Bob Baffert. He broke his maiden on debut over 6 ½ furlongs at Del Mar by 9 ½ lengths. He won his last start, the one-mile Kelso at Belmont, by 5 ½. And he’s got plenty of speed. Irad Ortiz, Jr rides.
Baffert’s Eight Rings 12-1 with Paddy Power and Betfair won his last, an optional claimer over 1 1/16 miles at Santa Anita. Before that, he hadn’t done much while running over shorter trips.
Ginobili (5-1, William Hill) is a course and distance winner two starts back. He won over seven furlongs at Del Mar last time and can’t be ruled out.
PITT’S PICK: Life Is Good
War Like Goddess 7-2, Betfair has only been beaten once in seven starts. She won her last over this trip in the Flower Bowl at Belmont. It’s her first time at Del Mar.
Going to Vegas 16-1 with bet365 has won her last three, including the 1 ¼ mile Rodeo Drive at Santa Anita last time making all. Prior to that she won the Mabee over nine furlongs at Del Mar. She was second in a Grade 3 at Del Mar in her only start over this trip last November.
Aidan O’Brien has opted to go here with Love 9-2, William Hill, rather than the Turf. This is a furlong shorter. She has been consistent, but will probably have to race prominently to have a chance here. Ryan Moore rides.
James Fanshawe’s Audarya 6-1 with William Hill and Betfred won this last year when it was run at Keeneland. She hasn’t won in four starts since and she may not find the Del Mar course to her liking. She is drawn on the far outside in stall 12 with jockey William Buick.
PITT’S PICK: Going to Vegas
Dr Schivel 5-1 with bet365 and Betfred has won his last five starts, including a course and distance victory in the Bing Crosby two starts back. He’s unbeaten in three appearances at Del Mar.
Firenze Fire 12-1, Paddy Power and Betfair can be his own worst enemy. He tried to savage Yaupon in the straight before finishing second to him in the Forego at Saratoga, then finished second in the six-furlong Vosburgh after breaking through the gate. Six furlongs looks to be Vosburgh winner Following Sea’s ideal trip. He’s 8-1 with Paddy Power and betfair.
Special Reserve 10-1, William Hill won the Phoenix at Keeneland last time out over this trip. Prior to running second in the six-furlong A G Vanderbilt at Saratoga he had been running in lesser company but he has speed and must be considered.
PITT’S PICK: Dr Schivel
Smooth Like Strait 16-1, bet365 and Betfair was second in the Del Mar Mile two starts back. His last win came in the Shoemaker Mile at Santa Anita in May. He’s capable of a good effort.
Mo Forza on offer at 6-1 with bet365, Ladbrokes and Coral has won his last four, including the the Del Mar Mile (he also won it last year). He’s a live contender.
PITT’S PICK: Mo Forza
Letruska (Ladbrokes and Coral going 11-8) is the one to beat here. She has won six of seven starts this year and has plenty of speed. It’s her first run at Del Mar and the only question is how she handles the track.
Malathaat 5-1 with bet 365 and Paddy Power has won six of seven career starts and is capable of showing speed. This is also her first run at Del Mar. She won the 1 ¼ mile Alabama at Saratoga last time and earlier in the year won the Kentucky Oaks.
The speedy and consistent Shedaresthedevil 8-1 with bet365 and William Hill won the 1 1/16-mile Clement Hirsch over the track two starts ago.
PITT’S PICK: Letruska
Charlie Appleby has a good chance with his pair Walton Street 12-1, bet365, winner of the Canadian International over this trip at Woodbine, and Yibir 9-1, William Hill and Ladbrokes, winner of the Jockey Club Derby over the same trip at Belmont.James Doyle rides Walton Street while William Buick gets aboard Yibir.
Roger Varian’s Teona 8-1 with William Hill and Ladbrokes won Longchamp’s Prix Vermeille in her last run. She has a win over the figure eight course at Windsor, which could set her up well for a run here. David Egan rides.
Tarnawa 15-8 generally won this last year at Keeneland for Dermot Weld. She was second in the Irish Champion Stakes and the Arc in her last two starts. Last year’s winning rider Colin Keane is again aboard.
O’Brien’s Broome 20-1, Betfred was 11th in the Arc last time, but won the Grand Prix de Paris over this trip back in July. He may be better than his odds suggest. Frankie Dettori takes the mount.
PITT’S PICK: Teona
There’s a lot of speed in here, so there are a lot of runners with chances. Knicks Go a best-priced 9-4 with Coral is a confirmed frontrunner who has won his last three starts. His only question marks are it’s his first time at the track and at this trip. If he handles the track and stays the extra furlong he looks the likely winner.
Contested Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit 7-1 with William Hill and Ladbrokes also has speed and has won his last two, including Santa Anita’s Awesome Again over nine furlongs by five lengths. Before that, he won the Shared Belief over a mile at Del Mar. He has a lot going for him, he gets the trip, he’s got speed, and he’s won over the track.Regular rider John Velazquez is aboard.
Art Collector 9-1, Paddy Power and Betfair has won his last three starts and runs well when he gets an early lead. It’s his first time at Del Mar. He steps up in trip but he has a chance if he likes the track.Mike Smith, the jockey with the most Breeders’ Cup wins, is aboard for the first time.
Essential Quality 3-1 with Ladbrokes and Paddy Power also won his last three, including the Belmont Stakes and Travers. He hasn’t run since the latter race in August. He’s proven over further, he’s versatile and can lay up with the pace, but it’s his first run at Del Mar.Regular rider Luis Saez is again aboard.
Hot Rod Charlie 11-2 Unibet and William Hill should handle the trip and can win from the front. Max Player 9-1, William Hill was prominent when winning his last two and if he handles the track should do well.
PITT’S PICK: Medina Spirit
