Blackjack is one of the most popular card games played around the world today. It’s a game that is loved by many due to its simplicity, with players able to quickly pick up how to play whether they’re playing online or offline. Everybody playing the game does so in the hope of winning and this has seen several individuals come up with different strategies to wrestle the edge back from the house.
One of the most popular strategies people have and continue to look to is card counting. Card counting is seen as the best way to gain an edge; when playing blackjack and it has proven to be successful in the past. Most blackjack players will understand what card counting is as well as how it can improve their chances of winning; and while in some cases you need to be skilled arithmetically, in others you don’t.
Card counting works especially well when blackjack is being played with a single deck of cards. In this circumstance the likelihood of the house winning is zero. So, a player is likely to break even or be somewhere around that mark by deploying the best strategies available. The odds available to players from blackjack is one of the reasons why it’s so popular and it’s also why card counting, and similar strategies, have become extremely common too.
In its simplest form, card counting involves keeping a log of which cards have come out of the deck during the game. If a player can keep a mental note of the cards which have been played; they are therefore going to roughly know which cards are yet to be played and whether most of them are high or low. This information can indicate to a player whether they should be perhaps betting larger amounts than usual, or smaller amounts. If there are more lower cards left in the deck, the chances of getting blackjack is reduced; so you ideally want a deck that still has high value cards remaining.
It’s believed that using a strategy such as card counting can increase a player’s chances of success by 1%. Now, while this amount doesn’t seem much at all, in blackjack it’s huge. This is because it tips the edge in their favour, rather than the dealer’s. What this means is that if they were to play the game over and over again they should be netting a profit; rather than losing money.
The High-Low strategy is the most common as it just requires the player to keep a mental note of three specific groups of cards. High number cards are 10s and face cards and these will subtract one from the tally. The low cards are the 2s-6s and they add one to the tally; while all other cards are ignored by the player. When the deck is shuffled, the tally is zero, a positive tally means the cards to be played are likely to be high; while a negative tally means low cards are due out next.
